Carlos Alcaraz has become the big winner of the ABN AMRO Tennis Championships in 2025. The Spaniard emerged victorious in the final, where he played against Alex de Minaur , ultimately winning in three sets: 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. It was Alcaraz's first time competing in the prestigious tournament in Ahoy, and as the number one seed, he certainly didn't disappoint. With the title at the ABN AMRO Open, Alcaraz secured his first final victory of the year, following Spanish world number three Jannik Sinner emerges as winner of the ABN AMRO tennis.

Big names of the party in Rotterdam

This year, tournament director Richard Krajicek once again managed to attract a number of world-class players to Rotterdam. Among them were Alcaraz , Daniil Medvedev , De Minaur and Andrey Rublev had no fewer than four top-ten players in the line-up, and names like Stefanos were also included Tsitsipas , Holger Rune, and former winners Felix Auger-Alliassime and Stan Wawrinka were present. Among the Dutch players, Tallon Griekspoor, Botic van de Zandschulp, and the only seventeen-year-old Mees Röttgering were on the main tournament entry list. The notable absentee was Jannik Sinner : he was initially going to travel to Rotterdam to defend his title, but the Italian needed his rest after his victory at the Australian Open and therefore canceled at the last minute.

Unfavorable draw for the Dutch

Dutch players Niels Visker , Ryan Nijboer, Thijs Boogaard, Max Houkes , Gijs Brouwer and Jelle Sels did not survive the qualifying tournament for the ABN AMRO Tennis 2025, and the Dutch players who were allowed to participate in the main tournament were also unlucky in the draw. Griekspoor was paired with former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini , Röttgering also faced an Italian ( Mattia Bellucci ) and Van de Zandschulp even had the toughest draw with Alcaraz . Yet, Van de Zandschulp, who had already beaten Alcaraz at the US Open, was far from without a chance against the top seed.

In fact, after Alcaraz secured the first set via a tiebreak, the second set was won by our compatriot (6-3). Unfortunately for Van de Zandschulp and his Dutch fans, Alcaraz quickly broke the tie in the deciding set, a blow he couldn't recover from, resulting in the set being decided 6-1 in Alcaraz 's favor. Röttgering also played just one match at the ABN AMRO Tennis 2025. Röttgering , only seventeen years old, played his very first match on the ATP Tour and lost his match against Bellucci 6-3, 6-2.

Two wars of attrition for Griekspoor

That left Griekspoor with the only Dutch ace in Ahoy, and he too faced a tough challenge against Berrettini . However, he won the first set relatively quickly, 6-3, after which Berrettini took the second set via a tiebreak. A deciding set was needed, and thanks to strong serving from both players, this one also went to a tiebreak, which – thanks in part to the support of the many Dutch fans in the stands – Griekspoor won impressively. Tsitsipas was the North Hollander's next opponent, and this match, too, proved to be one where the crowd was the big winner. Unfortunately for them, Griekspoor lost this time, as after three hours of tennis, Tsitsipas was the lucky winner: 6-7, 7-6, 7-5.

Short tournament for Auger-Alliassime and Medvedev

All Dutch players had thus been eliminated in the first two rounds, including players like Auger-Alliassime (who retired after two sets against Andrea Vavassori ), Rune (who suffered a heavy defeat against Pedro Martinez ), and Medvedev , who was defeated in three sets by the tournament's surprise Bellucci . Seventh-seeded Arthur Fils also had his tournament over in the second round, after being defeated by Daniel Altmaier . What makes this story even more remarkable is that the German Altmaier had actually already been eliminated in the qualifying rounds, but entered the tournament as a 'lucky loser' due to the withdrawal of Giovanni Mpetshi-Perricard . After having previously defeated Aleksandar Kovacevic , his victory against Fils even brought him into the quarterfinals.

In the quarterfinals, however, the German was powerless against Alex de Minaur (6-1, 6-4), and Martinez also had little to offer against his compatriot Alcaraz , who won the Spanish clash 6-2, 6-1. After Bellucci pulled off another upset – beating Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals 6-4, 6-2 – the most exciting quarterfinal match was between Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz . The two players were evenly matched, and in the end, it was the tall Pole who stormed through to the semifinals after two and a half hours of tennis: 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.

De Minaur again runner-up at ABN AMRO tennis

In that semifinal, Hurkacz faced Alcaraz , and it was another thrilling match. Although Alcaraz was the heavy favorite, Hurkacz managed to turn it into a real match. After Alcaraz won the first set 6-4 and Hurkacz took the second-set tiebreak, the Spaniard took the final and deciding set 6-4. This meant he qualified directly for the final in his debut in Rotterdam, where he faced Alex de Minaur . The Australian, who also reached the final in Ahoy last year, did manage to eliminate Bellucci . The Italian seemed to be running out of steam, as he was dispatched 6-1, 6-2, within an hour.

This is how the final of the ABN AMRO Tennis 2025 played out between the top two seeded players, and tournament director Krajicek must have been pleased. Ahoy's Centre Court was packed, and the final went to a three-setter, giving the crowd a run for their money. Alcaraz won the first set 6-4, but De Minaur fought back and won the second set 6-3, sending the men to a decisive third set. Alcaraz proved the better of the two, securing his first ATP Tour indoor title.
