Grand Slam tournaments

The Grand Slam tournaments are the most important tournaments of the year for professional tennis players. All the world's top players are present, and many players participate in qualifying to secure a spot in the main draw. Each Grand Slam tournament lasts two weeks, with qualifying sessions held the week before each tournament. There are four Grand Slam tournaments in total: the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon, and the US Open. Singles, doubles, and mixed doubles are played. There is also a wheelchair tennis tournament. There is also a junior tournament, where the world's best young players participate. They are often only 17 or 18 years old and dream of a future in professional tennis.

Qualifications and main tournament

Before the main tournament begins, a qualifying tournament is held the week before. A total of 128 players are invited to the main tournament. These are, of course, the world's No. 1 through No. 128 players, but sometimes a player is absent due to injury or other circumstances. In such cases, a player ranked below No. 128 can also be invited as a wildcard. Generally, players ranked below No. 128 in the world must receive a qualifying invitation. The qualifying tournament has room for 32 players. They compete in three rounds for the top four spots in the tournament. The top four players are then eligible to participate in the main tournament.

The main tournament

The main tournament lasts two weeks and consists of the first, second, third, and fourth rounds, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final. The women's singles tournament is played in a maximum of three sets, and the men's doubles tournament in a maximum of five. Men's matches, in particular, are notorious for lasting longer than five or six hours. A case in point is the 2010 Wimbledon final, played by John Isner and Nicolas Mahut. This match lasted a remarkable 11 hours and 5 minutes. The match was ultimately played over three days. John Isner won the final set 70-68. This was an all-time record and remains unbroken to this day.

Australian Open

The first Grand Slam of the year will be played in Melbourne, Australia. This competition will be played on hard courts. The main stadium is called the Rod Laver Arena, named after former top player Rod Laver. The tournament is held in January, which falls in the middle of the Australian summer. High temperatures are not uncommon, making the matches sometimes grueling.

When people think of Roland Garros, they often think of Rafael Nadal. This Spanish tennis player has won the tournament 13 times and is a favorite every year. Among the women, Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova, and Simone Halep have won the women's title in recent years. Philippe Chatrier Court is the main stadium of this tournament. The second stadium is called Suzanne Lenglen Court.

Wimbledon
