If you've been playing tennis or padel for a while , you've probably heard of the new craze that's attracting more and more people: pickleball. This relatively young sport is rapidly gaining popularity, especially among tennis and/or padel enthusiasts. But what exactly is pickleball? And what are the key differences and similarities when compared to tennis? In this blog post, we'll tell you more about pickleball and explore how this emerging sport resembles tennis.

What is pickleball?

Pickleball is a sport that originated in the United States and was developed in the 1960s. It can be seen as a combination of three different sports: tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Pickleball is played with pickleball paddles and a lightweight plastic ball with holes in it, on a court smaller than a tennis court. The goal of the game is simple: hit the ball over the net and try to prevent your opponent from returning it.

Although pickleball and tennis are different sports, there are clear similarities that make it appealing for tennis players to give pickleball a try. Consider, for example, the goal of the game, which we mentioned above. Moreover, just like tennis, there's a net in the center of the court that separates the two sides. Just like tennis, pickleball also uses a "striking weapon": while tennis uses a racket, pickleball uses paddles. Furthermore, both tennis and pickleball can be played recreationally or at a highly competitive level. The tactical aspect and the challenge of beating a strong opponent are therefore present in both sports.

The differences between pickleball and tennis

Despite the similarities we've just listed, there are also several key differences between pickleball and tennis. These differences make pickleball a new and unique playing experience, attracting many tennis players looking for something new. Below, we've summarized some of the most significant differences.

Size of the track
One of the biggest differences between pickleball and tennis is the size of the playing court. A pickleball court is considerably smaller than a tennis court. A pickleball court is 13.4 x 6.1 meters, while a tennis court (for doubles) is 23.77 x 10.97 meters. Therefore, you typically have to cover less distance in pickleball than in tennis.

Ball and speed
The ball used in pickleball isn't comparable to the familiar tennis ball. The pickleball is a lightweight plastic ball with holes, which makes it move slower and bounce less. This affects the speed of the game and makes it more based on precision than pure power.

Tennis rackets vs pickleball paddles
While tennis uses a long, narrow racket, pickleball uses pickleball paddles. These paddles are shorter and wider, giving you more control over the ball while generating less power in your shots.

Rules and scoring
The rules of pickleball differ slightly from those of tennis. One key difference is that in pickleball, you can only score when you're serving. Furthermore, pickleball is played to eleven points, and you must win by at least two points. In tennis, you play with 15, 30, 40, and game, and you win a set if you're the first to win six games.

Interesting for young and old

Pickleball is growing worldwide and is becoming increasingly popular in the Netherlands. More and more sports clubs and recreation centers are offering the sport. For tennis enthusiasts who want to switch to pickleball or try it as a variation, there are increasingly more options. The sport is less stressful on joints and muscles, making it attractive not only to younger players but certainly also to seniors and those who want to avoid injury.
