This week, the international tennis elite will gather in Paris for the third time this year. After Roland Garros and the Olympic tennis tournament were previously held in the French capital, it's now time for the Paris Masters. Many stars have once again traveled to Paris for this tournament to try to win the coveted 2024 Paris Open title. Who will succeed Novak Djokovic, who lifted the medal last year? In this blog post, we list the favorites!
Djokovic fails to show up
It's certain that Djokovic won't defend his title on the hard courts of Paris this year. The Serb, a losing finalist in Shanghai earlier this month, previously announced he would miss the tournament. This means the seven-time winner of the tournament will not have the chance to defend his title from last year. Nevertheless, there are plenty of favorites who will undoubtedly be aiming for victory at the Rolex Paris Masters. Of the world's top ten, Djokovic is the only one who will not be playing tennis in Paris.
For example, world number one Jannik Sinner will be present . The Italian has already won no fewer than seven tournaments this year, losing only six (!) of his 71 matches. He recently topped the charts in Cincinnati and Shanghai, and in between, he also won the US Open . Opponents at the Paris Masters will therefore have to be strong to beat the 23-year-old Sinner, who, according to the Paris tennis schedule, will play against either Ben Shelton or Corentin Moutet in the second round.
Alcaraz, Zverev and Medvedev
Someone who could be considered a major challenger to Sinner is Carlos Alcaraz , the second-seeded player. He has already won four titles this year – two of which on hard court – and will face either Nicolas Jarry or Lorenzo Sonego in his first match. Other top-ranked players in the Paris Open lineup include Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev , and Taylor Fritz. Holger Rune is also in the lineup. He pulled off an upset in 2022 by winning the Paris Masters, defeating Djokovic in the final, and will play his first match of this year against Italian Matteo Arnaldi.
Tallon Griekspoor is the only Dutchman competing at the Rolex Paris Masters. Botic van de Zandschulp was defeated in qualifying by Sonego and will therefore have to forfeit the tournament. Griekspoor, who reached the semifinals earlier this month at the Stockholm tournament, will face Luciano Darderi in his first match. The two tennis players also met earlier this year at Roland Garros, a decisive victory for Griekspoor, who also goes into this match as the favorite. If Griekspoor wins the match against his Italian opponent, he will face Zverev.
Dutch in the doubles tournament
In the doubles tournament, we see two Dutch players on the list. Jean-Julien Rojer and Joe Salisbury will play against Neal Skupski and Michael Venus, while Wesley Koolhof is also competing in the Paris Masters. He will play with Nikola Mektic and will be playing from the second round onwards. The Dutch/Croatian duo will face either Alexander Bublik/Karen Khachanov or the Frenchmen Arthur Fils and Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
The final of the Paris Open will be played on Sunday, November 3.
