Tennis is a popular sport where passion, technique, and endurance are key elements. Over the years, countless records have been broken and achievements made that will remain in the history books for a long time to come. These impressive records are a source of inspiration for every tennis fan, and we're sure you'll be amazed by some of them. In this blog post, we'll take you through some of the most remarkable tennis records of all time. For example, what was the longest tennis match ever? Who has won the most Grand Slams, and what was the longest tiebreak ever in a top-level match? We've listed them for you below!

What was the longest tennis match ever?

The longest tennis match in history took place at Wimbledon in 2010, and it can rightly be called historic. It was the match between American John Isner and Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, which lasted a staggering 11 hours and 5 minutes (!). This marathon match, totaling a whopping 183 games, was spread over three days, and the final set alone lasted a staggering 8 hours and 11 minutes. Curious about the score of this longest tennis match ever? Note: 6-4, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 70-68 in Isner's favor, making this still—and likely to remain—a historic tennis match. Incidentally, the rules have also changed since then. Nowadays, decisive match tiebreaks are played at major tournaments to prevent such matches from happening again.

Who has won the most Grand Slams?

A Grand Slam title is the most prestigious prize in tennis and represents the pinnacle of any player's career. The four Grand Slam tournaments—the Australian Open, Roland Garros, Wimbledon , and the US Open—attract the world's elite tennis players every year, making them the highest possible platform for players to showcase their talents. Over the years, there have been a few players who have consistently excelled at Grand Slams and achieved numerous Grand Slam singles titles.

The battle for the most Grand Slams, especially among men, was always quite intense. Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal long led the pack, each with around twenty Grand Slam titles, but they have now been surpassed by Novak Djokovic , who now has an impressive 24 Grand Slam singles titles . In women's tennis, Margaret Court, who played in the 1960s and 1970s, also holds the record with 24 titles. She is closely followed by Serena Williams, who won 23 Grand Slam singles titles during her career.

Who is the best tennis player in the world?

The question "Who is the best tennis player in the world?" is difficult to answer unequivocally. It depends, after all, on how you define "best." Is it the player with the most titles, the one who has held the world number one position the longest, or perhaps the player with the most impressive playing style? We already mentioned above that Djokovic is the player with the most Grand Slam titles to his name, and the fact that he has held the ATP ranking for the most weeks—over 390 (!)—makes him a strong contender for this title. However, if you ask several tennis fans who they consider the best tennis player in the world, many will answer "Federer" or "Nadal."

What is the longest tiebreak ever in tennis?

We previously encountered John Isner's name when discussing the longest tennis match ever, as he played for over eleven hours against Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon in 2010. However, since 2022, the American also holds the record for the longest tiebreak ever played at the highest level. At the tournament in Dallas, Isner faced his compatriot Reilly Opelka, who is also known as a service machine in tennis. The strength of both tall Americans' serving skills was evident in the second tiebreak of the Dallas match. This tiebreak ultimately ended 24-22 – a record – in Opelka's favor, thus winning the match.
